GIF Toolkit Guide / Help

Most custom-node help text is a README you have to leave ComfyUI to read, on a GitHub page you'll close the moment you find the line you needed. The GIF Toolkit author took the other route: the instructions are a node.

Drop GIF Toolkit Guide / Help on the canvas and it renders a formatted panel describing the pack's whole four-stage flow - load video, prepare, design text, preview, approve. It's the workflow's "section 0," and in the bundled ComfyUI_GIF_Maker.json it sits off to the side doing nothing but being readable.

      What it actually is

This is a UI-only node, and unusually literal about it. Its INPUT_TYPES is an empty dict, its RETURN_TYPES is empty, and its function returns nothing. It has OUTPUT_NODE = True, which means the engine treats it as a terminal and will execute it on a run - but there's no work to do, so it just fires and exits. It has no sockets to wire, nothing to connect, no way to break your graph.

The visible help panel is not Python. It's HTML injected by a bundled frontend extension (web/js/gif_toolkit_help.js) that ComfyUI loads because the pack declares a web directory. The Python class is essentially a labeled placeholder that gives that extension something to attach to.

      The inputs and outputs

There aren't any. Nothing in, nothing out, no widgets to set. As of pack version 0.4.1 it doesn't even have a language dropdown anymore - the changelog is explicit that the author removed the in-node language combo and made the guide English-only, on the reasoning that node-level language switches fight with ComfyUI's own locale system. If you want a translated UI, that's ComfyUI's job now, not this node's.

Practical consequence: you can delete it from a workflow with zero effect on the output, and re-adding it later is one drag. Nothing in the pack depends on it. I'd keep it, honestly - a flowchart of a five-node pipeline you touch twice a year is worth the two square inches.

      Install

Same install as the rest of the pack - Manager, search GIF Toolkit; or:

      cd ComfyUI/custom_nodes
      git clone https://github.com/oekobudde/ComfyUI-GIFToolkit.git

Full restart afterwards, not just a browser refresh, because the web extension only registers at startup. No pip dependencies of its own. The workflow the guide describes also needs ComfyUI-VideoHelperSuite, which is not bundled - install it separately or you'll be hunting for the missing VHS_LoadVideo node the guide keeps referring to.

      Common issues

The node shows up as an empty box with just a title bar. That's the extension not loading, not a broken node. The Python side runs fine either way - you just get no panel. Hard-refresh the browser first; if it persists, restart ComfyUI and check the terminal for a JS or registry error at startup. A partial install (custom_nodes folder copied while ComfyUI was running) will also do this.

You're using the old Webex-named node and the panel is blank. Expected, and worth knowing: the help extension attaches only to the node whose class name is GIFToolkitGuide. WebexGIFGuide is the same Python class registered under a legacy alias name, and the JS explicitly ignores it. The node runs, the help doesn't draw. Swap in the current node and the panel appears.

It "runs" and does nothing. Correct - a no-op output node is exactly what it's supposed to be. It is not a preview node and it doesn't save anything; if you're looking for the frame preview, that's GIF Multi-Text Designer or GIF Text Preview.
