There are two kinds of upscale: the kind that adds pixels and the kind that adds detail that was never there. The first is boring, safe, and instant. The second is generative, costs more, and has a nasty habit of rewriting faces. The Recraft Crisp Upscale node sits in a useful middle: it's a "crisp upscale," which means it makes the image bigger and cleaner - sharper edges, less noise - without inventing a new world.

That's the honest pitch. It's not the flashy creative upscaler in Recraft's lineup (that's the Creative Upscale sibling, which does lean generative). Crisp is the "polish and enlarge" pass: the thing you run when the image is good and you just need it at a usable resolution without artifacts.

What it actually is

The most minimal partner node you'll meet: one input, one output, no settings. It ships with ComfyUI core, needs no install, and runs in the cloud through Comfy's proxy to Recraft's API. Sign in with your ComfyUI account, spend a small per-call credit fee, and the upscale happens on Recraft's servers - your GPU does nothing but host the graph. It's synchronous: submit, poll, finished IMAGE comes back.

There's genuinely nothing to configure. If you like an upscaler whose entire controls fit in the title, this is your node.

What it does and doesn't do

The description says it plainly: it "increases image resolution, making the image sharper and cleaner." That's the "more pixels plus cleanup" rung from the KB's upscaling essay - the one where the source already has the detail you want, and you just need it bigger and tidier. It'll firm up soft edges and scrub noise without hallucinating texture the way a generative upscaler would.

Which means the important part is knowing when not to use it:

  • If the source is genuinely soft and you want invented detail - pores, fabric weave, texture that was never captured - you want a generative upscaler instead, not this node.
  • If you just need pixels and the source is already sharp, a local ESRGAN or Lanczos pass is free, instant, and equally non-hallucinating. Crisp is the pay-for-convenience version of that, with slightly better noise cleanup.

Where it earns its credits: you're mid-workflow, the image needs to be larger and cleaner for what comes next (print, a video pass, a display size), and you'd rather not babysit a local upscale pipeline or download models. Drop it in, one wire, done.

Gotchas

  • One image at a time; it's not a batch tool.
  • The output is bigger and cleaner, but it won't rescue a badly degraded image - that's the generative rung's job.
  • It costs credits per call with no knobs to tune the bill down. If you're upscaling a large batch, that adds up fast, and a local upscaler starts looking very attractive.
  • Standard partner-node rules: Comfy account with credits, localhost-only login, needs internet.

When you want an upscale with zero decision fatigue - no model dropdown, no denoise guessing - this is the node. One wire in, one wire out, bigger and cleaner on the other side.
