Where the Creative upscale reinvents your image, Magnific Image Upscale (Precise V2) is the faithful one: high-fidelity enlargement with three sliders that map directly onto the classic upscaler worries - sharpness, grain, and fine detail. Same cloud story as the rest of the Magnific family (core partner node, no install, billed per call through Comfy's proxy), but aimed at the person who wants a bigger, cleaner version of what's already there, not a reinterpretation.
If you've read the KB's upscaling essay, this is the "pixel-faithful, generative-adjacent" lane: it can add micro-detail and texture (that's the ultra_detail and smart_grain jobs) but it isn't trying to change the scene. The ceiling is a frankly silly 10060×10060 pixels, which for almost everyone means "the limit isn't the node."
How it works
Image goes up, job gets polled, result comes back as a regular IMAGE tensor. The model is Magnific's precision upscaler served through Freepik's backend, and the three sliders are where all the tuning happens:
- sharpen (0–100, default 7) - edge definition and clarity. This is the "crisp it up" knob.
- smart_grain (0–100, default 7) - intelligent grain/texture added so the result doesn't come out looking waxed-over. The anti-plastic switch; bump it for organic subjects.
- ultra_detail (0–100, default 30) - fine detail, textures, micro-details added during upscaling. This one does the heavy lifting for "more resolution of real texture."
Plus flavor (sublime for general use, photo for photographs, photo_denoiser for noisy photos) and scale_factor (2x–16x).
The inputs that matter
- image - single image only; a batch throws immediately.
- scale_factor - 2x through 16x. Cost scales with it, and 16x on a big source can exceed the 10060-px edge limit.
- sharpen / smart_grain / ultra_detail - the three sliders that are the entire point of this node. Start at the defaults and adjust one at a time; they interact.
- auto_downscale - off by default; turn it on if your requested scale would blow past the resolution ceiling and you'd rather the node shrink the input than fail.
Output is IMAGE, ready to save or continue processing.
Where people get burned
- Reaching for Creative when you wanted Precise (and vice versa). Precise = faithful enlargement with texture control. Creative = prompt-guided reinterpretation. The names are the spec sheet.
- Flavor matters for photos. Leaving
sublimeon a noisy photograph is how you get a smooth, disappointing result;photo_denoiserexists for exactly that case. - Slider tug-of-war. Sharpen up and grain up at the same time can look like noise; sharpen up with grain left at 0 looks plastic. Move one, look, move again.
- The megapixel ceiling is a real edge. 10060 pixels per side sounds infinite until you upscale a 4K image 4x.
auto_downscaleis your friend. - Cost. Precise V2's price range runs higher than Creative's at the top end. For a 2x pass it's fine; the badge tells the real story before you queue.
