When One Text Encoder Isn't Enough

Of the three list nodes in kyusu-nodes, this is the one you'll reach for least - but when you need it, nothing else does the job as directly. Clip List (8 -> list) gathers up to eight CLIP inputs into a list output, and because the node declares OUTPUT_IS_LIST, ComfyUI runs everything downstream once per item. Feed it several checkpoints' text encoders, and one queue press encodes your prompt with every one of them.

Mechanically it's the same pattern as the pack's Model List: make_list collects clip1…clip8, silently drops any input that isn't connected, and hands the engine a list. The OUTPUT_IS_LIST flag is the load-bearing part - without it you'd get one CLIP object that isn't a list, and the downstream node wouldn't know what to do. With it, a single CLIP Text Encode downstream runs once per CLIP, so each encoder produces its own conditioning from the same prompt.

When it's actually useful

The honest use case is encoder comparison. A CLIP is the text-encoder half of a checkpoint - different checkpoints ship different encoders, and the same prompt encodes differently through them. Wire the CLIP outputs of the models you want to compare into clip1…clip8, run one batch, and you get N conditionings from N encoders, all built from the identical prompt. Keep them index-matched with the pack's Text List (wire clip1 with text1, and so on) so prompt and encoder stay paired.

It's a niche tool. For single-model work - which is most work - one CLIP is all you need and this node adds nothing. It earns its place in a comparison rig, not in your daily workflow.

Inputs and output

  • clip1…clip8 - optional CLIP inputs, typically from checkpoint loaders or dedicated CLIP/dual-CLIP loaders.
  • CLIP output (list) - feeds a CLIP Text Encode or conditioning node; the engine runs that node once per item.

Install

Pure Python, zero dependencies, no model downloads:

cd ComfyUI/custom_nodes
git clone https://github.com/TaIIo4KuH/kyusu-nodes

or ComfyUI Manager β†’ "Kyusu Nodes", restart.

Gotchas

  • Empty list = zero runs. Connect nothing and the list is empty, so the downstream encoder never fires - no output, no error. At least one slot has to be wired.
  • Every wired encoder still loads. ComfyUI executes all upstream inputs, so all connected CLIP loaders get loaded for the batch. For lightweight CLIPs that's nothing; for T5-class encoders it's real memory, and it adds up fast if you're comparing big model families.
  • It's a batch tool, not a router. If you want to pick one CLIP from eight at a time, that's the pack's Clip Input Switch instead - this one always runs everything you hand it.
